East of New Britain across the Saint Gorges Straight is New Ireland, which lays north west and south east, the Bismarck sea to the west and Pacific Ocean to the east. A long skinny island with a spine of mountainous terrain, small bays on either side. The provincial capital of Kavieng is on the northern tip and this is typically the cruising destination for the region. Stunning passages between New Ireland and New Hanover offer high adrenaline dive sites, pelagic fish aplenty and schooling eagle rays and lots of sharks. During the surf season this region is very popular as well, other adventures such as a bike trip down the Bolinski Highway, rafting on bamboo rafts down the rivers and immersing oneself in the Malagan culture make this one of the considered must do cruising grounds.
